A person from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background is someone who identifies ‘…as having a cultural or linguistic affiliation by virtue of their place of birth, ancestry, ethnic origin, religion, preferred language(s) spoken at home, or because of their parents’ identification on a similar basis’.

Queensland is a diverse place, with one in five Queenslanders born overseas and one in 10 who speak a language other than English at home. Immigrants, including refugees, play a critical role in the Australian agricultural industry. People from CALD backgrounds represented approximately 11 per cent (25,2056 people) of all agriculture industry employees in 2016. Attracting migrants to rural areas helps to reduce labour shortages — particularly during seasonal harvesting peaks — and counteracts the trend of population movement away from the bush to the metropolis.

In order for us to break down barriers and promote meaningful communication and interaction in our work environment, it is important to develop and form our awareness and understanding of what these barriers are. Clearer communication and understanding of our employees and their background will support a harmonious and inclusive work environment where everyone feels confident and comfortable to engage with each other. Thereby, avoiding mishaps that can be easily overcome by having an awareness and understanding of cultural sensitivities and language barriers.
