The Australian Institute of Agricultural Science (now Ag Institute Australia (AIAST)) established the trust in 1964.

The Trust commemorates the contribution of Amos William Howard to the adoption and use of subterranean clover as a pasture plant in Australia.

There are a range of wonderful opportunities available under the Trust:

Pasture Research Grants

AW Howard Memorial Trust Early-Career Research Grant (up to $15,000).

  • Applications open 1 February 2020.
  • Applications close 31 March 2020.

AW Howard Memorial Trust Grants-in-aid (up to $5,000 each).

  • Applications open 1 February 2020.
  • Applications close 31 March 2020.

AW Howard Memorial Trust Honours Scholarship ($5,000 stipend plus $3,000 operating).

  • Round 1 applications open 1 February 2020 and close on 31 March 2020.
  • Round 2 applications open 1 August 2020 and close on 30 September 2020.

AW Howard Memorial Trust Postgrad Research fellowships ($10,000 per annum up to 3.5 years).

  • Applications open 20 August 2020.
  • Applications close 31 October 2020.

AW Howard Memorial Trust Study awards (up to $5,000 each).

  • Applications open 1 February 2020.
  • Applications close 31 March 2020.

Pastoral Industry Extension Study Awards: On alternate years, or at its discretion, the Trust will grant a study award worth up to $20,000.

Australian Graziers or Rangeland Pastoralists Study Award: On alternate years, or at its discretion, the Trust will grant a study award worth up to $20,000.

Tim Healey Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship ($10,000 per annum up to 3.5 years) will be awarded annually to a deserving post-graduate student studying in a field that benefits the future of Australian farming.

Selection for a Dr Tim Healey Memorial Legacy Scholarship is based on merit. This includes merit of an academic and / or non-academic nature.
Applicants will need to provide written applications that clearly state their capacity to address one or more of the research interests in Schedule A.
Applicants should also provide details of their:

  • research proposal, including outputs;
  • industry contribution, including how the industry will benefit (outcomes);
  • supervisory support, including industry-based supervision; and
  • history, commitment and passion for research in this area.
