Let this article assist you in determining the right breed of cattle for your enterprise. I was surprised to learn that Australia has close to 100 different breeds of cattle.

This fact sheet provides a listing of the various breeds of cattle available in Australia, they are as follows:

1) British Cattle (Angus, Hereford, Poll Hereford, Shorthorn, Galloway, Murray Grey, Devon, Large Devon)

2) European (Dual purpose – Simmental, Gelbvieh, Maine Anjou, Brown Swiss Charolais, Romagnola. Meat (large mature size) – Chianina. Meat (medium mature size) Limousin and Blonde Aquitaine. Double-muscled – Belgian Blue and Piedmontese)

3) Bos Indicus (Brahman, Sahiwal)

4) Adapted Taurine / Sanga (Tuli, Senepol)

5) Dairy (Holstein, Jersey)

6) Japanese (Black Wagyu, Red Wagyu)

7) Composite (Santa Gertrudis, Braford), Bos Indicus Composite (Brangus, Droughtmaster, Charbray, Belmont Red)

This information should assist producers to find the right breed of cattle for their enterprise. Finding the right fit can be challenging however the animal needs to be able to easily adapt to the location, environmental factors and pastures. Choosing the right breed will result in the best outcome for both the livestock and the producer.
