Farm Table says:

Using this tool can help you improve herd reproductive performance and also milk income by having a closer calving pattern.  If you split-calve your herd, it's recommended for herds with longer calving periods (10 - 12 weeks or longer).

This tool is produced by Dairy NZ and looks at your herd’s calving pattern and its impact on herd reproductive performance.

It allows you to measure the gap between the herd’s actual and desired calving pattern, and assess the likely financial impact of improved herd reproduction performance from closing this gap.

The key sections include:

  • why use this tool;
  • assessment of the likely impact of calving patterns on past, impending and subsequent reproductive performance;
  • developing and implementing strategies to help close calving pattern gaps, including considering the potential costs involved in having a smaller calving period.

To use this tool, work through the fact sheet’s four basic steps:

  1. Measure;
  2. Identify the gap;
  3. Assess the benefits; and
  4. Develop and implement a strategy.

It also includes a Planned Start of Calving date calculator.

After following the tool through, you will be able to estimate the likely effect of closing the calving pattern gaps on herd reproductive performance as well as the economic benefit.
