This Internet-based calculator from DairyNZ estimates the impact of lameness on the farm business financially, understand the origin of these costs, and the potential economic gains through lameness reduction by the Healthy Hoof program.

In using the lameness cost calculator, these simple steps should be followed:

  1. Step 1: Enter the information into the Current farm data boxes to calculate the potential lost revenue per cow and herd.
  2. Step 2: Complete boxes in Set your own targets column.
  3. Step 3: Complete boxes in the Cost of Healthy Hoof Advisory Service.
  4. Step 4: Click the Calculate button to carry out the cost/benefit.

The types of data to be inputted include herd size, number of treated lame cows and the observed lame ones (by farm staff, by vet, and with antibiotics in a withholding period), average milk days, production average, milk price, and number of cows culled for lameness before and after Christmas.

Suggested prices are provided to attain the cost per module.

Once filled out, the calculator provides the potential lost revenue, specifically the total cost due to lameness within per lame cow and business per season.
