Twin and summer sowing of grain and pasture crops are two establishment techniques transforming pasture renovation in Australia’s low to medium-rainfall mixed-farming regions. Cover cropping involves sowing scarified seed at a reduced rate with the previous crop so that the pasture germinates and grows under the crop. This technique is not as effective as twin sowing or summer sowing.

The innovative techniques were developed to establish pastures without interfering with the busy autumn and winter sowing period for crops.

This publication compares data from trials in medium to dry rainfall areas in WA and NSW and concludes there is better performance from twin and summer sowing of hard-seeded legumes that will revolutionise pasture establishment.
