  • Barely varieties Fathom, La Trobe, Spartacus CL,Rosalind, Hindmarsh and Compass are consistently yielding the highest in the Victorian (VIC) Mallee and Wimmera National Variety Trials (NVT).
  • Compass is very quick to mature and performs better in terms of yield and management at a later sowing date.
  • RGT Planet yielded well at the Mallee and Wimmera NVT sites in 2016 and 2017 (in above average seasons). The variety performs best in a longer season environment (medium to higher rainfall areas).
  • ‘Compass type’ barley varieties with good early vigour, combined with prostrate growth habit are the best competitors (Compass, Fathom, ScopeCL, RGT Planet).
  • ‘Hindmarsh type’ and Úrambie type’ varieties with very slow early vigour are poor competitors (Hindmarsh, Spartacus CL, Urambie).
  • Three years of data have reinforced that certain varieties can be used as a non-herbicide option for grass weed control.
