Australian Agricultural Sustainability Framework

Farm Table says:

The Australian Agricultural Sustainability Framework (AASF) is a national, whole-of-sector framework designed to define, measure, and communicate sustainability in Australian agriculture.

Released as a sector-led initiative, it addresses the growing demand from markets, consumers, governments, and investors for credible, consistent sustainability reporting across diverse farming systems. Bringing the AASF to Life serves as the blueprint for transforming this high-level framework into practical tools and widespread adoption.

At its heart, the AASF organises sustainability into measurable themes:

  • Environmental: Soil health, water use, biodiversity, and emissions.
  • Social: Community engagement, worker welfare, and animal care.
  • Economic: Business viability, innovation, and market access.

These elements provide a common vocabulary for reporting, allowing stakeholders to map their activities against the framework without starting from scratch. The report emphasizes that success hinges on grounding these themes in on-farm evidence, ensuring claims are defensible and actionable.

The report outlines a phased, collaborative rollout to drive real-world uptake. Key strategies include:

  • Developing user-friendly guidance, case studies, and digital tools tailored to producers, advisers, and industry bodies.
  • Piloting applications in select commodities to test and refine the framework.
  • Engaging stakeholders through workshops and co-design processes to build ownership.

The report stresses that adoption must demonstrate tangible value—such as streamlined reporting or stronger market positioning—rather than adding bureaucracy. It calls for sector-led governance to oversee evolution, ensuring the framework remains relevant amid changing policies and technologies

Benefits for Australian Agriculture

For producers, the AASF offers a way to showcase holistic performance, potentially unlocking premiums or financing. Supply chains gain consistent supplier assessments, while policymakers access aggregated insights for evidence-based decisions. Investors benefit from standardized ESG (environmental, social, governance) metrics tailored to agriculture’s unique context.
