Australia’s Avian Influenza Outbreak Declared Eradicated but New Threat Looms

The ABC News Landline reports that Australia’s avian influenza outbreak, which severely impacted poultry farms and led to a national egg shortage, has been declared eradicated by the Federal Government. In 2024, the H7N3 bird flu strain affected six farms on Australia’s east coast, including a major egg producer in Victoria, where farmer Brad McAuliffe had to cull over half a million birds, losing tens of millions in revenue.

Though the outbreak is officially over as of early 2025, Brad remains cautious. His free-range hens have exposure to migrating wild birds, meaning the risk of reinfection continues. To protect his farms, he has invested millions in strict biosecurity measures such as vehicle undercarriage washes, QR code visitor tracking, showering for personnel before entering poultry sheds, and real-time monitoring of flock health using advanced technology.

The ABC News Landline video also warns of a far deadlier strain, avian influenza A H5N1, which has caused widespread outbreaks globally, affecting not only poultry but dairy cattle, marine mammals, and wild birds. This strain, more difficult to control, has yet to reach Australia, but experts say it is inevitable due to migratory birds crossing oceans.

Australia’s strong biosecurity laws help, but cannot entirely prevent arrival. The government is investing over $100 million into surveillance, testing migratory birds, and conducting outbreak preparedness drills. Wildlife experts fear catastrophic effects on native species if H5N1 appears.

Farmers are urged to limit contact between wild birds and poultry, practice rigorous hygiene, and report any sick or dead birds immediately. Brad warns consumer demand for free-range eggs may increase outbreaks and egg prices because of the ongoing costs of protecting poultry. Vigilance and preparation remain crucial for safeguarding Australia’s $70 billion agricultural industry.
