Saving the Heart of a Country Town: Bemboka’s Only Pub Reopens

In the small town of Bemboka, New South Wales, with a population of around 600, the reopening of the only pub has brought new hope and vitality. After being closed for nearly six months and struggling to find a buyer, the local hotel finally found new owners in Karen and Rowan Orco, brave farmers who took on the challenge of running the pub alongside their farming duties.

A Labour of Love and Commitment

Owning and managing the pub has proved to be hard work, particularly while also running a 526-hectare cattle farm. Karen manages the hotel daily while Rowan balances his farm work with support at the pub. Their two daughters, Tash and Justinta, have also rallied to support the family’s new venture, highlighting the community spirit and family commitment that this project has inspired.

A Vital Community Hub

The pub is essential for Bemboka, serving not only as a place for meals and drinks but as a crucial gathering point for locals, who previously faced increasing isolation as other businesses closed down. The pub’s revival aims to rejuvenate the local economy and provide a social hub where people can connect, whether over a coffee, a meal, or a pint.

Resilience Amid Challenges

The Orocs’ farm and community endured significant hardships, including devastating bushfires in recent years that caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure. Despite these setbacks, their determination to keep the pub open reflects the resilient spirit of the region, underscoring how vital such local institutions are to rural communities.

Looking Forward

Bemboka’s pub reopening is more than just a business venture; it symbolises hope for the town’s future. With the support of the local community and the Orco family’s dedication, the pub is poised to become the heart of Bemboka once again, fostering connection and revitalisation in this rural corner of Australia.
